The Merciful Man
The merciful man doeth good to his own soul; but he that is cruel troubleth his own flesh.
Proverbs 11.17
Two men worked on a large ship. One day the mate, who normally did not drink, became intoxicated. The captain seized the opportunity to harm the mate’s reputation by writing in the daily log: “Mate drunk today.” The mate was aware of his evil intent and begged him to change the record. Smugly, the captain replied, “It’s a fact, and into the log it goes!” A few days later, the mate was keeping the log and wrote: “Captain sober today.” Realizing the implications of this statement, the captain asked that it be removed. The mate answered, “It’s a fact, and into the log it stays!”
Jehovah, who shall sojourn in thy tabernacle? Who shall dwell in thy holy hill? He that…speaketh truth in his heart; he that slanderers not with his tongue, nor doeth evil to his friend, nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbor…
Psalm 15.1-3
