What Have You Done?

The end of this year is less than two months away. Have you done anything different this year you have not done in years past? Have you started something new? Have you done the same things you have always done? Were you able to complete whatever it was you started?

Luke 17:10 says “Even so ye also, when ye shall have done all the things that are commanded you, say, ‘We are unprofitable servants; we have done that which is our duty to do.” People say, “I’m never going to catch up.” We never do. That passage sets the record straight. At the end of this year, there will still be more to do. The poor will always be here. Children will need to be fed. Another job will have to be done. We will want to do better. We hope God gives us another opportunity. We will be praying for more time, because we are not done yet.

Three men were given the responsibility to take what their lord gave them and use it wisely. Two of the three did. One took his “talent” and buried it (Matthew 25:24-25). The two who increased their “talents” were rewarded: “Well done, good and faithful servant,” their lord said (Matthew 25:21). Which example best describes what you have done this year? There have been opportunities for you this year. Have you given the time, energy, prayer, and service to those opportunities?

Our duty has always been to “fear God and keep His commandments” (Ecclesiastes 12:13). That assignment will never change. It is the same year in and year out. It is our task to do the works of God while it is day. “The night cometh, when no man can work” (John 9:4). Get busy. You are not finished yet. Begin every day asking in prayer, “What can I do for Thee, O God, today?”
