What If God Can Do It?
The “default” for marriage is doing nothing - COASTING. A great analogy is like paddling a canoe on a river. Not just any river. A river with a waterfall nearby and a strong current pushing you toward the falls. We must be paddling upstream (being INTENTIONAL) all the time or the current will move us toward ISOLATION. Isolation is where the “Falls of Marriage” are waiting to take you out.
What God does for marriage is more than most can imagine. God raises a marriage to a level where people learn patience, love, hope, joy, communication, and faith. God directs a coupe in marriage to “put off” behaviors that put a marriage to death. Behaviors like lying, evil desire, anger, railing, selfishness, etc. He can replace that with behaviors like compassion, lowliness, forbearance, and forgiveness. This is the kind of person God desires of all of us in Colossians 3:5-15.
Can God do that in your marriage? Let me ask you this: Did God raise His Son, Jesus Christ, from the dead? Do you truly believe the answer is “YES?” If God can raise His Son from the dead, He can raise your marriage. He can lift your marriage to a level you would never think is possible, no matter where it is today. It has happened. It can happen. It can happen to you. Do not let your marriage coast. Let God raise it with your intention, work, and love. Move your marriage forward with knowledge, understanding, and wisdom (Proverbs 24:3,4).
You can keep your marriage from going over the “falls” by answering the following three questions separately, and then talking with your spouse:
- What do we need to START doing?
- What do we need to STOP doing?
- What do we need to CONTINUE doing?
