A Great Father

Abraham was known by God as a man who commanded “his children and his household after him, that they may keep the way of Jehovah, to do righteousness and justice; to the end that Jehovah may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him” (Genesis 18:19).

The first indication of Abraham’s success as a father is his example. He commanded his family “after him.” He knew in whatever path he walked, his family would follow. He took this seriously. If his family was to walk with God, it depended on him.

The standard of fatherhood for Abraham was “the way of Jehovah.” The wold can give a father so much advice, but there is no greater counsel for a father than the Father of us all.

Abraham wanted his family to follow “righteousness and justice.” By doing so there would be no regrets. He had already witnessed how God had blessed him through righteousness and justice. He knew if the life of his family followed righteousness and justice, God would bless them as well.

There is a sacred reason why fathers are given the task to nurture their children in the admonition of the Lord (Ephesians 6:4). Abraham illustrates it so well.
